Cleaning Tiles with Bar Keepers Friend

You have to be SUPER careful cleaning tiles! Tiles can be made so differently and there is a huge variety of textures, meaning Bar Keepers Friend is not suitable for all tiles. Not sure what type of tile you have? Check out common types of tiles here.

IMPORTANT READ FIRST: Bar Keepers Friend is not recommended on porous surfaces, matte finish or coloured grout.

TEST!!! We can not stress this enough. As we recommend with any cleaning project, it’s always best to start off with the mildest cleaning solution and start in a small (hidden if possible) area.

Ceramic and Porcelain (not Matte or Porous)

Typically we’d recommend the More Spray and Foam as the gentlest option, use with a light-grade pad or Scrub Daddy in warm water. The next step up is the Soft Cleanser if you need something stronger.

Instructions:
Step 1:
Wet a light-grade pad or Scrub Daddy in lukewarm water.

Step 2: Spray MORE Spray & Foam on to the pad or directly on to the tile.

Step 3: Get Scrubbing!

Step 4: Rinse thoroughly within one minute of application.

Step 5: Dry with a soft cloth or towel.

Granite/Marble and Natural Stone Tiles

Our general range is not recommended for marble or stone as they are porous surfaces, however we do have a Granite and Stone cleaner specifically formulated for these types of surfaces.

Note: Porous stones are prone to discolouration and may struggle to rinse. Test on a small area and proceed with caution.

Instructions:
Step 1:
Wet a light-grade pad or Scrub Daddy in lukewarm water.

Step 2: Spray Granite & Stone Cleaner on to the pad or directly on to the tile.

Step 3: Clean with the pad/sponge and rinse thoroughly within one minute of applying.

Step 4: Dry with a soft cloth or towel.

Glass Tiles

Glass tiles can generally be treated similar to windows, however if the surface has a protective coating, check with your manufacturer to ensure you are not voiding any warranty and/or removing the coating.

Instructions (General clean):
Step 1:
Grab a light-grade pad or Scrub Daddy.

Step 2: Apply Soft Cleanser on to the pad or Scrub Daddy.

Step 3: Scrub Away!

Step 4: After no more than a minute, rinse thoroughly.

Step 5: Dry with a towel or soft cloth.

Instructions (Tough water marks/limescale):
Step 1:
Wet a tough-grade pad or Scrub Daddy with cold water.

Step 2: Apply BKF Powdered Cleanser directly to the glass or onto the pad/sponge.

Step 3: Scrub in small circles, some elbow grease may be required!

Step 4: Rinse thoroughly after up to a minute scrubbing

Step 4: Dry with a soft cloth or towel.

Matte Tiles

This tends to be our problem child… I mean tile. Bar Keepers Friend is not generally recommended on matte surfaces as it can cause discolouration and staining, however some customers have had success.

If you do choose to try, test in a small area first with the gentlest option (MORE Spray). If in doubt we recommend contacting the manufacturer for the best cleaning practices on these types of tiles.

Porous Tiles

The porous nature of some tiles can make them prone to discolouration and staining, and these can be difficult to rinse. Similar to above (matte tiles) Bar Keepers Friend is not generally recommended on porous surfaces. If you do choose to try test in a small area first (I know we say that a lot but trust us it is for good reason)

To identify if you have porous tiles or stone, drop a small amount of water on the surface. If it is porous, water marks and darkening are visible after the floor is wet, leaving areas patchy and discoloured until they dry out. This picture shows a tile before and after the sealing process.
