With 2000+ reviews and over 35000 Facebook followers, there is no denying that Kiwis love using Bar Keepers Friend. However, there are times when these products are not recommended.
As with anything you want to be cautious, especially when using new cleaning products so here are a few insights in how NOT to use BKF.
1. Not Testing First
I know we harp on about testing here at Bar Keepers Friend NZ, but it is for good reason. Testing on a surface first can prevent cleaning mishaps or damage to a surface or item.
Always, always, ALWAYS test in a small (hidden if possible) area first, and follow instructions carefully.
2. Leaving on Too Long
Bar Keepers Friend products work quickly, and for most surfaces we recommend rinsing off within a minute of application, as per instructions. Leaving the product on the surface for a longer period may result in discolouration or streaks.
Hot tip: Set a phone timer.
3. Mixing Other Cleaning Products
Most cleaning products, including Bar Keepers Friend, should not be mixed with other cleaners or chemicals. Combining BKF with ammonia or bleach can create toxic fumes.
Unlike BKF, many of the top selling cleaners contain bleach. These cleaners mixed with BKF are especially dangerous, as bleach mixed with BKF can create chlorine gas.
Hot tip: Rinse off any other cleaning products (if used recently) before using BKF.
4. Trying on Everything
While Bar Keepers Friend cleans and polishes many surfaces, there are many surfaces you will want to avoid using BKF on.
Do not use BKF on the following: cast iron, granite, wood, fabric (incl. leather) and painted, porous or non-stick surfaces.

5. Using Dry
Bar Keepers Friend was never designed to be used dry. The original powder should always be mixed with water by either adding water to the powder and mixing it in, or wetting the surface to clean and then adding BKF.
Like any powder, Bar Keepers Friend can be blown into the air, and should never be inhaled.
6. Not Rinsing After
Our products need to be thoroughly rinsed after use (See #2). If not rinsed correctly it may leave a white film or streaks on the surface.
Always rinse thoroughly after use, then wipe down the surface with a clean dry cloth.
